🏔️ Amazon's Olympus

Amazon is building their own AI model. Its name? Olympus. And while it might not be Zeus of the AI world just yet, it's got some interesting tricks up its sleeve.

Here's what we know about Amazon's new baby:
  • 🦣 It's a chunky model, packing somewhere between 400 billion and 2 trillion parameters (for context, that's... a lot)

  • 📺️ Unlike most AI models that mainly excel at text, Olympus is specifically designed to understand video content

  • 🏀 Want to find that game-winning shot from last night's game? That's exactly the kind of thing Olympus is being built to handle

  • 💡 The project is led by Rohit Prasad, Amazon's Head Scientist of AGI and former Alexa boss

While Amazon's been relatively quiet in the AI race, they've been playing a pretty smart game. They're taking a two-pronged approach: building Olympus in-house while maintaining strong external partnerships (including that casual $8B investment in Anthropic).

Why it matters?

Amazon's CEO Andy Jassy isn't mincing words about AI's importance, calling it potentially "the largest technology transformation since the cloud." That's quite the statement from the guy who helped build AWS into the cloud computing beast it is today.

What's next?

Word is we might get our first look at Olympus at next week's AWS re:Invent conference. While early reports suggest it might not be ready to challenge the text capabilities of current AI leaders like Chat GPT or Claude, its video processing abilities could carve out an interesting niche in the market.

We'll be keeping our eyes peeled at re:Invent to see how Olympus performs in the wild. If nothing else, it's another sign that the AI landscape is getting more diverse and specialized - and that's probably a good thing for everyone.
