π OpenAI's Grand Finale: Meet o3
πOn the 12th day of "shipmas," OpenAI gave to us... their most powerful model yet. Meet o3, the successor to o1 that's making other AI models look like they're still using Windows 95. (And yes, they skipped "o2" because of potential trademark drama with a British telecom company)
Here's what makes o3 special:
βIt's the "think before you text" of AI models β taking extra seconds or minutes to reason through problems before responding
π΅Comes in two flavors: regular o3 and o3-mini (think grande vs. tall in Starbucks terms)
πHas a "compute dial" letting you choose between quick responses and deep thinking (like choosing between microwave and slow-cooker modes)
The receipts are impressive:
π Scored 96.7% on a 2024 advanced math exam (basically the valedictorian of AIs)
π Achieved a 2727 rating in competitive programming (that's like being the Magnus Carlsen of coding)
π Crushed previous AI records on various tests, making other models look like they're still using dial-up
βοΈ OpenAI is rolling this out slower than your friend who says "let's grab coffee sometime." Safety researchers get first dibs starting now, with o3-mini dropping in late January and the full o3 following after.
π12 Days of OpenAI: A TLDR Roundup

OpenAI kicked off with a premium tier that'll cost you more than your fancy gym membership. The headline feature? Their new o1 model that takes its time to think (and occasionally fib). For $200/month, you get unlimited access to o1, GPT-4o, and Advanced Voice Mode, plus extra computing power. Sam Altman's pitch? It's for power users who need more horsepower than the $20 plan can provide. Though interestingly, o1 comes with a quirky feature β it's been caught playing fast and loose with the truth when its goals don't align with users'.
OpenAI introduced Reinforcement Fine-Tuning (RFT) for their o1 model series β think of it as sending your AI to grad school. Their first real-world test? Partnering with Berkeley Lab to identify rare genetic diseases. The fine-tuned o1 Mini surprised everyone by outperforming its bigger sibling, jumping from 17.7% to 31% accuracy in identifying correct genes.
Sora Turbo made its debut, bringing video generation to the masses β well, at least those willing to pay. Plus users get 50 videos monthly at 480p, while Pro users can create 500 videos at 1080p. The launch wasn't without drama β OpenAI had to pause sign ups on the same day due to higher than expected demand and it took a few days to be fully back up and running. European users will have to wait a bit longer, thanks to data privacy regulations.
Canvas broke free from its Plus-only chains, becoming available to all users. The update brought Python integration, real-time console output, and a "Fix Bug" button. The coolest part? Custom GPTs can now use Canvas, demonstrated by a charming Santa Letter Drafter GPT.
In a collaboration, Apple integrated ChatGPT into Siri through iOS 18.2. The feature is limited to iPhone 15 Pro models and newer devices, with basic features free and premium capabilities requiring a subscription. It's Apple's way of acknowledging they need help in the AI race, choosing to integrate rather than build from scratch.
Advanced Voice Mode got a visual upgrade, adding video capabilities after a seven-month wait. The feature lets users share their screen and get real-time help, plus includes a surprise Santa Mode voice option. Available for Plus and Pro subscribers, though Enterprise and Edu users have to wait until January.
Projects feature launched, helping users organize their AI conversations with color-coding, context retention between chats, and seamless integration with other features. It's like giving your messy AI conversations a Marie Kondo treatment.
ChatGPT Search became free for all users, complete with voice search, rich results, and maps integration. The timing raised eyebrows, with studies suggesting AI-powered search could siphon 25% of publisher traffic.
π©βπ» Day 9: Developer Paradise
The o1 model hit the API, with pricing at $15 per 750,000 words analyzed and $60 for generation. They also added WebRTC support and new developer toolkits for Go and Java. Access is limited to "tier 5" developers who've spent at least $1,000.
βοΈ Day 10: 1-800-CHATGPT
OpenAI went retro with a toll-free number offering 15 free minutes monthly for U.S. users to chat with ChatGPT. International users get WhatsApp access instead. Unlike Google's GOOG-411 from 2007, OpenAI promises not to use calls for training.
ChatGPT got cozy with desktop apps, adding support for Apple Notes, Notion, and Quip. New features include floating windows, drag-and-drop functionality, and keyboard shortcuts for power users.
OpenAI's most powerful model yet, o3, closed out the series. It boasts a 96.7% score on advanced math exams and a 2727 rating in competitive programming. Available in regular and "mini" versions, with a unique "compute dial" for balancing speed and depth of thinking.
